Baseball Falls To Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind.--Central Michigan saw its lead over league-leading Ball State evaporate as the Cardinals scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to post a 5-4 come-from-behind win on Friday afternoon at Ball Diamond.
The Chippewas held a 4-3 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Ball State's Paul Henry doubled to score Eric Bava to tie the game at 4-4. The Cardinals scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning when Jimmy Long led off the inning with a solo home run.
BSU reliever Paul Henry retired the Chippewas in order in the ninth inning to pick up the save.
The Cardinals got on the scoreboard first with a run in the second inning.
The Chippewas tied the score with a run in the fourth inning.
Brad Reid and Mike Galloway had back-to-back singles to put runners at first and third for Mike Gates. Gates responded with a sacrifice fly to score Reid to knot the score at 1-1.
Ball State regained the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth. Henry and Matt Wood each had an RBI to give the Cardinals a 3-1 advantage.
The Chippewas came right back with three runs of their own in the sixth inning.
Jason Helps led off the inning with a solo home run and Gates crushed a two-run shot to give CMU a 4-3 lead.
CMU starter Dan Horvath was tagged with the loss. He gave up 11 hits and five runs in 7 1/3 innings of work. His record stands at 5-4 on the year.
Helps, Reid, and Galloway each had two hits a piece to lead the CMU offense.
Ball State hosts the Chippewas (28-19 overall, 11-10 Mid-American Conference) in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
