MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University will say "good bye"
to an old friend this weekend when the final games at Theunissen Stadium, home of Chippewa baseball for more than 50 years, will be played.
The University of Toledo will provide the opposition in the four-game series beginning on Friday, May 11, with a single, nine-inning game at 3 p.m.
A big celebration is planned prior to Saturday's twinbill with the Rockets that will start at 1 p.m.
All former Chippewa players have been invited back for the day and they will be introduced in a pregame ceremony beginning at 12:40 p.m. They then will take their old positions on the field. Former head coaches Bill Theunissen, Waldo Sauter, Dave Keilitz and Dean Kreiner will join current head coach Judd Folske to throw out the first pitches.
The final game in Theunissen will be played on Sunday at 1 p.m., and it will be "Senior Day." Central will honor senior Matt Crowley (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids CC/Creston), Jason Helps (Wyoming, Ont./St. Clair CC), Nick Latra (Farmington) and Bryan Scheurer (Portland/Grand Rapids CC/St. Patrick).
The "old" Theunissen Stadium will be torn down at the conclusion of the 2001 campaign to make room for a health professions building. A "new" Theunissen Stadium is currently under construction on West Campus Drive in the southwest part of campus. It will be ready for the 2002 season.
