MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University senior Bryan Scheurer earned first team honors on the 2001 Verizon Academic All-America baseball team.
In a vote by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the outfielder became Central's first first-team All-American in baseball since John Northrup in 1976 and only its third in history. Ken Papes also earned first team laurels in 1974.
Scheurer is a 3.91 student majoring in elementary education. He batted .365 this past season with 18 doubles and 22 stolen bases to lead the Chippewas to a 35-24 record.
Central Michigan's last first team academic All-American was volleyball standout Wendy Feldman in 1998.
