THE TEAM-The Central Michigan men's cross country team will have the next 12 days off before it heads down to East Lansing to participate in the Michigan State Open on Friday, Sept. 21. The race will take place at the Forest Akers Golf Course and will start at 6:30 p.m.
Craig Fuller is in his 12th year as head coach of the men's cross country team. Fuller, who is the assistant men's track coach, has guided CMU to one Mid-American Conference (MAC) crown back in 1999 and has mentored four All-Americans and five MAC champions.
OPEN INVITE - "The Michigan State meet is an open meet," noted head coach Craig Fuller. "I believe that everyone on our team is looking to race at Michigan State. This will be a good chance to assess our team and an opportunity for the athletes to show me what they can do."
YOUTH MOVEMENT - "We ran our younger athletes at the Detroit Invitational last weekend," said Fuller. "I thought that Dave Ernsberger (Petoskey/So.) ran a good race for the second straight week. Ron Miller (Stanton/So.) and Brian Terpak (Riverview/Jr.) looked good as well. All three are running for regular spots on the team."
RECAP - The Central Michigan men's cross country team ran to a second-place finish at the Detroit Invitational last Saturday morning.
Mid-American Conference rival Eastern Michigan took the top billing with a 52-point finish while CMU was second with 69 points. Following were: Wayne State 78, Oakland 80, Siena Heights 109, Canisius 165, Front Line Racing Team 173, Detroit 180, and Macomb Community College 276.
The top placer for Central was David Ernsberger who took third in the four-mile race. He had a time of 20:38. Also in the top 10 was Ron Miller who took seventh at 20:56.
The rest of the Chippewa runners finished as follows: Brian Terpak (Riverview/Jr.) 13th at 21:06, Matt Zissler (Hemlock/Jr.) 20th at 21:25, Chris Schiemann (Hemlock/Fr.) 26th at 21:37, Mike Wilusz (Royal Oak/Sr.) 30th at 21:45, Matt Kaczor (Freeland/Fr.) 41st at 22:02, Nick Schaedig (Cedarville/Fr.) 52d at 22:21, and Kellan Stephens (Defiance, Ohio/Fr.) 63rd at 22:55.
TOP-FIVE FINISHER - The walk-on freshman, Dave Ernsberger, has two top-five finishes in his first two collegiate races. He was fourth two weeks ago at the Drenth Invitational with a 20:31. He followed it up last weekend with a third-place showing at the Detroit Invitational with a time of 20:38.
SCHEDULE CHANGE - The Chippewas are no longer scheduled to race at the Bulldog Invitational in Big Rapids this coming weekend. Instead, CMU will run at Michigan State on Sept. 21. The MSU race will be held at the Forest Akers East Golf Course in East Lansing and will start at 6:30 p.m.
