THE TEAM-The Central Michigan University field hockey team (3-3, 1-1 Mid-American Conference) will travel to East Lansing to face Big Ten foe Michigan State (5-3, 1-0 Big Ten) on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 7:30 p.m. The Chippewas then travel to Muncie, Ind., to take on Ball State on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 11 a.m. (EST) and Indiana on Sunday, Sept. 30, at noon (EST).
The Michigan State Spartans are the No. 6-ranked team (NFHCA/STX National Coaches Poll) in the country and are will be looking to add to their five-game win streak on Tuesday. The Spartans are led by Bridget Cooper who has scored seven goals in eight games.
The Cardinals of Ball State are once again near the top of the MAC standings. Goalie Susan McDowell has a mere 0.82 goals against average and has recorded three shutouts in the 2001 campaign.
The Indiana Hoosiers have struggled to get their first win of the season, starting off with five-straight losses. The Hoosiers have only scored two goals in five games and have already been shutout three times this season.
Cristy Freese enters her 16th season at the helm of Chippewa field hockey. She owns a 112-167-6 career record and earned MAC "Coach of the Year" laurels in 1987 and in '89. She won the MAC title in 1990 and has guided CMU to the MAC championship game four times.
TOUGH WEEK -"MSU will be tough and it is probably still a little upset from our overtime victory last season," said Head Coach Cristy Freese.
"Ball State is a young team and I think that people took advantage of that last season. But, this year it is right up there with the top of the MAC. I am just happy to be playing games again after all the time off."
LAST WEEKEND - The Chippewas split their games last weekend in opening the MAC portion of their schedule.
CMU shutout Miami on Friday, 4-0, en-route to its first MAC win of the season. The Chippewas got on the board with 16:01 remaining in the first half on Tarah Trottier's (Kitchener, Ontario/So.) first goal of the season. The Chippewas struck early and often in the second half with goals by Meg Lewis (Pittsford, N.Y./Jr.), Katrina Woznek (Amherst, N.Y./Sr.) and Allison Foland (Springfield, Va./So.).
Goalkeeper Janel Spero (Shoreham, N.Y./Jr.) made one save in recording her second shutout of the season and the fifth of her career.
On Sunday,. Central Michigan lost a hard-fought match to the sixth-ranked Louisville Cardinals. With the Chippewas trailing 1-0 in the first half, Woznek netted her second goal of the weekend to tie the game. The Cardinals scored two goals in the second half to put CMU away.
PLAYING WELL - "We did a good job of scoring goals in the second half, and we knew we needed to because a 1-0 lead isn't much," said Freese about the Miami game. "I was pleased because I thought that we played well in all aspects of the game.
"Although we lost to Louisville I don't feel that we played poorly. We took control in the first half and also had our chances at the end of the game but didn't capitalize on our opportunities."
