Webber Leads Men's Basketball To First MAC Win

MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University ended a seven-game losing skid in impressive fashion with an 88-84 Mid-American Conference (MAC) victory over Marshall here Wednesday night in men's basketball.
The win improved the Chippewa record to 4-9 for the season and 1-4 in MAC action. Marshall slipped to 8-7 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Senior guard David Webber led the way for CMU with 27 points, meshing five-of-seven from behind the arc, while junior guard J.R. Wallace bagged a career-high 18 points and junior guard Whitney Robinson added 14.
Marshall senior Tamar Slay matched Webber with 27 points followed by seniors J.R. VanHoose with 14 and Latece Williams 13.
The Chippewas led by as many as nine points at 36-27 with 5:45 to go in the half but had to settle for a 45-41 lead at the break.
CMU held leads of as many as 10 in the second half at 54-44 and 57-47, and finally at 81-71 on a layup by junior Chad Pleiness with 3:43 to play. The closest the Thundering Herd would get after that was the final margin of four, 88-84.
Central shot 55.6 percent from the floor (30-of-54) and was 12-of-17 (70.6 percent) from behind the three-point line. The Chippewas held a 28-24 edge in rebounding.
Marshall was even hotter from the field, nailing 29-of-48 for 60.4 percent.
The Chippewas return to action on Saturday, playing at Eastern Michigan. Game time is 7 p.m.
