MOUNT PLEASANT - The Central Michigan University women's soccer team can only play the waiting game now. With a 2-1 win over the University of Akron on Friday afternoon, the Chippewas have to wait until the end of the season to see if the conference playoffs are in their future.
CMU is now 5-7-4 overall and 4-5-3 in the Mid-American Conference.
The Chippewas marched to victory thanks to the foot of Cari VanDyck (Medina, Ohio/Jr.). With overtime looming in the not-too-distant future, VanDyck erased all thoughts of a fourth period when she found the net in the 89th minute of play.
With chaos wrecking havoc in the goal crease, Emilie VilleMonte (Farmington Hills/Sr.) put a point-blank shot on Akron netminder Megan McCarthy. McCarthy surrendered a rebound to VanDyck who slipped it into the net for the match-winner. It was her second game-winning goal of the season.
Akron broke the scoreless tie in the 41st minute of play. Elizabeth Riggs walked in all alone on CMU goalkeeper Kari Alexander (Midland/Jr.). She put a shot over the sprawling Alexander and gave Akron the 1-0 lead going into the half.
CMU tied it up shortly after the second stanza began. Jacqui Lorenzo (Hudson, Ohio/Jr.) picked up a loose ball in the crease and beat McCarthy for her second goal of the season. VanDyck got the assist on the play.
Alexander faced five shots and made four saves on the afternoon.
The Chippewas finish the regular season with a pair of non-conference tilts. First, CMU plays at Detroit on Sunday, October 27. Match time is set for noon.
