THE TEAM - The Central Michigan University men's cross country team is spending this week training for the Pre-NCAA meet in Terre Haute, Indiana, on Saturday, October 19, at 11 a.m. (EDT).
Over 100 teams will be competing in three races. The races are broke up by national and regional rankings. The course will host the national championship couse on November 25.
GULDEN INVITE RECAP - The Central Michigan University men's cross country team won the Gulden Invite in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, on Saturday afternoon. The Chippewas won the meet scoring 26 points.
Following CMU were: Canisius with 53 points; Bucknell 57; Duquesne 101; Quinnipiac 148; IUP 159; Detroit Mercy 202 and Susquehanna 204.
Jake Flynn (Benzonia/So.) captured the individual title with an 8k time of 24:58. Also scoring for the Chippewas were Luke Humphrey (Sidney/Jr.) in second at 25:01, Don Wilkins (Trenton/Jr.) was fourth in 25:14, Brian Terpak (Riverview/Sr.) took sixth in 25:21, Jacob Crowe (Grand Ledge/So.) finished in 13th in 25:45, Ron Miller (Stanton/Jr.) was 22nd in 26:07, Matt Kaczor (Freeland/So.) was 25th in 26:13, Jacques Henning (Harbor Springs/Jr.)was 38th in 26:34 and Chad Theuerkorn (Haslett/So.) finished 54th in 27:14.
DOMINATION - "We ran pretty good, we basically just handled them," head coach Craig Fuller said. "The front guys did not have to run that well but Flynn still had a great race and so did Brian Terpak and Jacob Crowe."
MOVING UP - With the win at the Gulden Invite, the Chippewas improved one spot in each the Great Lakes Region Poll and the Mondo National Poll, both polls are conducted by the United States Cross Country Coaches Association (USCCCA). The polls can be found at www.USCCCA.org. Central Michigan University is currently ranked No. 18 in the national poll and No. 4 in the regional poll.
STRENGTH IN THE MAC - Currently, three teams from the Mid-American Conference are ranked in the region. Eastern Michigan is No. 1, the Chippewas No. 4 and Miami University is in at No. 9. Eastern Michigan is currently ranked No. 7 in the nation while Miami University is receiving votes.
"This year is similar to 1998," Fuller said. "We had three top 25 teams back then and we are very capable of doing that again. It's great though, this means that whoever is going to win the conference meet, is a top 10 team in the nation."
NEW RECORDS - Jake Flynn and Brian Terpak both set personal records in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. Flynn set a personal record of four seconds, while setting a new course record at the Gulden Invite. Terpak's time of 25:21 topped his previous best of 25:43.
JUST ONE MORE CHANCE - Rick Bauer (Howell/Sr.) is applying for a medical redshirt after recently finding two high leg stress fractures. The injury will keep Bauer out for six weeks and he might not be 100 percent until outdoor track season.
"If there was anyone that deserved a medical redshirt it is Bauer," said Fuller. "Three seasons have been taken out due to injury including mono that took him out of indoor and outdoor season last year. For Bauer to finish with a 25:44 at the Griak Invite is pretty amazing."
