MOUNT PLEASANT -- J.R. Wallace scored a team-high 25 points and hit the game-winning three-pointer with no time left on the clock as Central Michigan University posted an 86-84 exhibition win over Lake Superior State on Sunday afternoon.
LSSU took a one-point lead following a Ben Dewar layup with 2.6 seconds left. CMU immediately called a timeout setting up what would be the game-winning play.
Mike Manciel inbounded the ball the length of the floor to seven-footer Chris Kaman who snatched the ball out of the air and kicked it in front of CMU's bench to Wallace who drained the three-pointer.
Wallace was 10-for-15 from the floor on the night with a pair of three-pointers and five offensive rebounds.
Kaman finished with 22 points, nine rebounds, and five blocks while Manciel added 19 points, four rebounds and four steals.
Dewar finished with a game-high 41 points on 15-for-21 shooting.
He and the Lakers opened the game with a 15-5 lead over CMU and then they stretched it to 30-15 with just over eight minutes left. However, Dewar picked up his third foul with 6:46 left and he watched the rest of the half from the bench.
With Dewar off the floor, CMU went on a 17-6 run the final six and a half minutes. CMU took its first lead of the game, 37-36, when Wallace hit a three-pointer on an inbounds play with 18 seconds left in the frame. The score remained 37-36 at the break.
Wallace sparked the Chippewas to start the second half and CMU led by as many as seven with eight minutes left. However, LSSU slowly trimmed CMU's lead down to two and then the Lakers took a one-point lead on a three-point play as Dewar was fouled with 45 seconds left.
Kaman made a pair of free throws to give CMU a one-point lead before Dewar, who scored LSSU's final 12 points, made his layup with just 2.6 seconds left.
Scott Jamison and Paul Kurtz each had 18 points for LSSU. Lake Superior shot 61 percent from three-point range hitting 11-of-18 attempts. The Lakers also made 11-of-12 free throw attempts in the game.
Central Michigan has one more exhibition game before opening the regular season. CMU meets Northwood on Saturday, Nov. 16, in Rose Arena at 7 p.m.
