TERRE HAUTE, Indiana - The Central Michigan University men's cross country team capped a tremendous season with its best finish in history in the NCAA Championship here Monday. CMU was ninth with 337 points in the 10k race.
Sophomore Tristen Perlberg of Bay City and sophomore Jake Flynn of Benzonia earned All-America honors, finishing in the top 30 of Americans. It was the first time since 1998 that the Chippewas had two All-Americans.
"We were solid," head coach Craig Fuller said. "It was a little disappointing having Michigan finish ahead of us, but we're only losing two seniors, and our All-Americans are redshirt sophomores so we have something to build on for next season."
Stanford won the NCAA Championship with a score of 47 points. Rounding out the top 10 were: Wisconsin 107; Eastern Michigan 165; Colorado 190; Oregon 210; Arkansas 214; Northern Arizona 247; Michigan 309; CMU; and Iona 376.
Perlberg led the Chippewas with an 31st place finish (30:30). Other top finishers for CMU were: Flynn 35th (30:35); junior Luke Humphrey of Sidney, 56th (30:55); junior Dave Ernsberger of Petoskey, 98th (31:19); junior Jeff Davis of Temperance, 117th (31:34); junior Don Wilkins of Trenton, 131st (31:46); and senior Pete Remein of Ishpeming, 173rd (32:27).
