ANN ARBOR - Jay Smith's homecoming in Ann Arbor was a happy one as his Central Michigan University Chippewas defeated Michigan, 85-78, on Tuesday night.
CMU's inside duo of Chris Kaman and Mike Manciel dominated the post as Kaman tallied a career high double-double of 30 points and 21 rebounds. Manciel had 28 points, two shy of his career high, to go along with nine boards.
Kaman was 11-for-13 (.846) from the floor and Manciel was 10-for-18 (.555) as CMU shot .566 from the floor.
"This was a great team effort," Smith said. "Chris (Kaman) played like he's capable of and Manciel was terrific.
"It was a good win. Every win in a Division I game is a big one, especially when you win on the road. I'm proud of the way we came back after a 30-point loss to DePaul."
T.J. Meerman added 10 points and Whitney Robinson seven off the bench for CMU.
"CMU did a good job of pressuring all of our ball handlers in the first half," Michigan coach Tommy Amaker said. "I didn't anticipate Manciel making all of his shots from the perimeter, he really earned it tonight."
The game was back-and-forth until Meerman gave CMU a two-point lead on a three-pointer with 7:44 left in the first half. CMU extended its lead to as many as six, which was the Chippewas' halftime margin, 39-33.
CMU shot a scorching 61 percent from the floor in the first half as Manciel and Kaman combined for 29 of CMU's 39 points.
The Chippewas led by nine with 16:46 left in the second but Michigan went on a 14-2 run to take a three-point lead with 11:48 remaining.
CMU would respond with a run of its own, going on a 15-2 spurt to take an 11-point lead, its largest of the contest.
The closing minutes were tight with the Chippewas scoring their last field goal with 1:31 left. CMU closed the game going 7-for-8 from the line in the final minute, Kaman going 6-for-6.
Michigan's Daniel Horton had a layup with 28 seconds left and Michigan cut Central's lead to three following a Bernard Robinson Jr. jumper off a CMU turnover. The Wolverines were forced to foul in the closing seconds and Kaman iced the game.
Horton scored a team-high 22 points for Michigan and LaVell Blanchard added 21.
Michigan recorded only eight more rebounds than Kaman did on his own as CMU held a 41-29 edge on the boards.
CMU improves to 3-1 while Michigan falls to 0-5 for the first time in school history.
