Chippewas Cruise Past Drake, 73-61

MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University rolled to a 22-point lead late in the second half en route to a 73-61 non-conference win over Drake University here Sunday afternoon.
The Chippewas are now 4-1 for the season while Drake falls to 3-4.
After trailing by an 18-17 margin with 7:16 remaining in the first half, CMU outscored the Bulldogs by a 17-6 tally to claim a 34-24 halftime bulge. Drake scored the first five points of the second half to cut it to 34-29 before the Chippewas rattled off 10 straight to take command.
Senior guard Whitney Robinson matched his CMU career-high with 20 points, nailing five-of-10 from behind the three-point line, while 7-0 junior Chris Kaman dominated the middle with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocked shots. Chipping in with 16 was 6-5 senior Mike Manciel.
Drake was led by 6-7 senior J.J. Sola with 17 followed by Luke McDonald with 12.
The Chippewas shot 50 percent from the field, hitting 26-of-52. The Bulldogs were at 47.7 percent on 21-of-44. Drake did hold a 31-25 edge in rebounding, though. CMU meshed nine of its 22 three-pointers compared to five-of-16 for the visitors, and had seven less turnovers, 24-17.
CMU is idle this week for final exams but will be in action this Saturday at Marist for a non-league game at 7:30 p.m.
