Chippewas Drop 4-3 Decision to Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota score four times in the fifth inning and held on to post a 4-3 win over Central Michigan University here Friday night.
CMU falls to 9-4 while the Gophers are now 6-11.The Chippewas scored first, posting an unearned run in the fourth. Tim Groves was safe on an error and then Scott Pickens beat out a bunt for a hit. Ryan Krueger sacrificed to move both runners and then David Latour had an infield bounce that plated Groves. CMU made it 2-0 with a run in the top of the fifth. Tim Bullinger collected his third straight safety with a grounder up the middle. He went to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a sacrifice liner to left by Travis Osborn.
Minnesota jumped ahead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, two on a triple to the fence in left center off the bat of Sam Steidl. Chippewa starter Dan Horvath walked two in that frame and both scored.
Horvath went the first six innings, allowing just three hits. He gave up four runs, all earned, while walking four and fanning three.
Minnesota starter Josh Krogman went six and two-third innings. The right-hander was tagged for eight hits and two runs, one earned. He walked two and struck out six. Krogman got the win to raise his record to 2-2.
CMU got one back in the eighth when Krueger walked with two outs and scampered home from first on a pinch-hit double by Keith Sampsell. Steve Sanfilippo's liner to center ended the frame.
The Chippewas had runners at first and second in the ninth inning when reliever Luke Beresford got Tim Groves to fly out to center on the first pitch to end the game.
Bullinger led CMU with four hits while Krueger had a pair of safeties. Pickens threw o9ut four-of-five basestealers.
CMU will play Minnesota in a doubleheader here Saturday.
