Chippewas Capture 7-3 Win Over Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. - Central Michigan University exploded out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning en route to a 7-3 victory over Rollins College here Sunday afternoon.
The win upped the Chippewa record to 3-1 while Rollins fell to 15-4.
A two-run double by Mike Gates and a two-run single by David Latour got Central off and running in the first frame.
The Tars tallied solo runs in the first, second and sixth innings to make it 4-3. The Chippewas wrapped it up with three more in the eighth inning - two on a homer by Keith Sampsell and the third on a solo homer by Tommy Grubb.
Three CMU hurlers held Rollins to seven hits with starter Ryan Cremeans claiming the win. He went the first six innings, allowing five hits and three runs. Lee Naplin tossed two scoreless innings and then Travis Osborn set down all three batters he faced in the ninth.
Gates had a banner day for the Chippewas, slamming five hits in five at-bats. CMU had only 20 hits in the first three games of the series with Rollins but ripped out 16 safeties against three Tar pitchers.
Central Michigan launches play in the Stetson Tournament in Deland, Fla., on Monday night against Stetson at 7 p.m.
