DeLAND, Fla. - A four-run outburst by Stetson University in the bottom of the eighth ruined Central Michigan University's bid to overtake the Hatters in the opening-round of the Stetson Invitational here Monday night.
Stetson claimed a 9-4 win over the Chippewas to raise its record to 11-1 while Central fell to 3-2.
The Hatters scored two runs in the second and held that margin until CMU's Mike Gates slapped a two-run single in the sixth to tie it, 2-2. However, Stetson came back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth off starter and loser Gavin Gillette for a 5-2 advantage.
The Chippewas scored single runs in the seventh and eighth on Keith Sampsell's single and a solo homer by Jason Cairns, his first collegiate hit.
Stetson wrapped it up in the eighth, scoring four runs off relief hurler David LeMieux.
Junior Tommy Grubb banged out four hits in four at-bats to lead the Chippewa offense.
CMU plays Evansville here Tuesday at 2 p.m.
