Chippewas Drop 11-3 Decision to Stetson

DeLAND, FLA. - Stetson University wrapped up at least a share of the 2002 Stetson Invitational baseball tournament here Thursday night with an 11-3 win over Central Michigan University.
The host Hatters are now 4-0 in tourney while Evansville and CMU are 2-2 and Penn State is 0-4. Stetson is 14-1 for the season and the Chippewas are 5-3.
Stetson jumped out to a 3-0 lead off Central starter Jeff Garner in the first frame. The Chippewas cut it to 3-1 with an RBI single by Travis Osborn in the fourth but the Hatters countered with an unearned run in the fifth to make it 4-1.
CMU scored in the bottom of the fifth on an infield bounce out by Steve Sanfilippo only to have Stetson counter with another unearned run in the top of the sixth.
The Chippewas had a chance to tie it in the eight when Mike Gates singled in a run to make it 6-3. With two on and two out, Tim Groves drove a ball to the warning track in right field just short of a home run.
The Hatters blew it open in the top of the ninth with five runs off relief hurlers Joel Donlon and Nick Zastrow.
Stetson had 14 hits to six for Central, and no Chippewas had more than one hit.
Central Michigan will face Evansville on Friday in a battle for second placed at 2 p.m.
