Chippewas Roll to 11-3 Win Over Detroit

MOUNT PLEASANT - After being shutout twice on Saturday, Central Michigan University scored nine times in the first three innings en route to a 11-3 non-league win over the University of Detroit here Sunday afternoon.
CMU is now 18-15 for the season while Detroit falls to 8-20. The Titans had beaten the Chippewas twice in Detroit on Saturday, 3-0 and 2-0.
The Chippewas scored early and often off Detroit, posting two in the first, three in the second and four in the third. Tim Bullinger doubled and scored the first run on a sacrifice fly by Mike Gates.
Tim Groves hit a long homer over the center field fence in the third while Jason Cairns doubled in another.
In the fourth, Bullinger tripled in two runs before scoring on a passed ball. Tommy Grubb made it 11-0 in the fifth with his second homer of the season, a two-run shot.Junior right-hander Jeff Garner was sharp on the mound for the Chippewas, collecting his second win of the season against three losses. He went five scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out eight and walking none.
Senior Gavin Gillette went two innings and gave up three runs, all earned. He walked two, allowed a single and three runs scored on a double to right.
Senior Lee Naplin tossed a scoreless eighth and freshman Travis Osborn hurled a scoreless ninth, striking out all three batters. CMU hurlers fanned 16 Titan batters.
Bullinger had three hits while Ryan Krueger and Grubb had two each.
Central Michigan returns to action on Wednesday night against Michigan State at Olds Park in Lansing. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. The Chippewas resume Mid-American Conference play this Friday through Sunday at home against Northern Illinois in a four-game set.
