Chippewas Ride Hurling of Chad Pleiness to 1-0 Win

MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University won a thrilling 1-0 eight-inning baseball verdict over Ball State University here Saturday in a Mid-American Conference contest.
The second game was postponed until Sunday and will be played as part of a doubleheader beginning at noon.
The pitching duel between CMU's Chad Pleiness and Ball State's Luke Hagerty was decided in the first extra inning when the Chippewas loaded the bases with one out and Tim Groves' sacrifice fly to left scored Mike Gates with the winner. Gates had singled, was sacrificed to second by Tom Grzywacz and went to third when Scott Pickens was hit to load the bases.
Pleiness (5-3) scattered six hits and struck out 12 against three walks while the 6-8 lefty Hagerty (7-3) gave up seven hits. He allowed struck out seven and walked four.
Tim Bullinger and Groves had two hits each, Groves doubling to lead off the seventh with the lone extra base hit of the game.
