Chippewas Pound Out 17 Hits in a 14-0 Win

MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University clubbed a season-high tying 17 hits and rolled to a 14-0 non-league baseball victory over the University of Michigan here Tuesday afternoon.
The win gave the Chippewas a record of 24-22 while the Wolverines fell to 17-31.
Senior Lee Naplin was the starter and winner, raising his record to 5-2. He went four innings and allowed just one hit while fanning two. Junior Jeff Garner went the final five innings, giving up just two hits and striking out seven. Garner collected his first save of the year.
Junior Mike Gates had a banner day for Central, clubbing four hits in four at-bats and driving in a career-high six runs.
CMU took a 3-0 lead in the first inning when Tim Bullinger and Ryan Krueger walked, stole a base and came home on a sharp single to right by Gates. Keith Sampsell then doubled Gates to third where he scored on an infield grounder by Tommy Grubb.
The Chippewas also scored three times in the bottom of the fifth. Krueger led off with a solo homer to left, his fifth of the season. Danny Gibbons then singled and stole second. Gates doubled to the fence in center to score Gibbons before Jim Geldhof had a pinch hit bunt single to move Gates to third. Grubb then had a sacrifice fly to left to score Gates.
Central broke it wide open with five runs in the sixth inning to go up, 11-0. Tim Groves led off with an infield single and scored on a double to the fence in left off the bat of David Latour. Krueger then singled in Latour . Gates doubled to the fence in right to score two more before Geldhof singled in Gates with the final run.
CMU added a couple of more runs in the seventh to take a 13-0 lead. Bullinger opened the inning with his second homer of the season. Gibbons then doubled to the fence in center and scored on Gates' fourth hit and sixth RBI of the game. Central capped the scoring in the eighth on a double by Tom Grzywacz.
Central Michigan will close its home schedule for the season on Wednesday with a pair of games against Oakland University beginning at 1 p.m. CMU then closes the regular season at Toledo this Friday-Sunday.
