Chippewas Pound Out 15-9 Win In MAC Tourney

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- Central Michigan University exploded for 15 runs and 19 hits and rode the superb relief pitching of senior Lee Naplin to a 15-9 win in the opening-round of the 2002 Mid-American Conference baseball tournament here Wednesday.

The win moved the Chippewas to a winner's bracket contest against Kent State University on Thursday at 4 p.m. The Golden Flashes won their opener, 13-4, over Ball State.

Eastern Michigan (30-27) scored three in the second off Chad Pleiness but Central pounded out eight nhits and scored nine times in the third to grab a 9-3 lead. Mike Gates had a three-run homer (his ninth) and a two-run single in the inning while Tim Bullinger had a pair of doubles.

CMU (30-23) scored three more runs in the fourth frame with two outs when Tim Groves doubled and scored on a double by David Latour. Bullinger singled in Latour and Tommy Grubb singled in Bullinger.

However, Eastern fought back with two in the fourth and chased Pleiness in the fifth with four more runs to make it 12-9. Joey Fahndrich came in to get the final out of the inning and become the pitcher of record for Central.

The Chippewas added two more in the sixth on a two-run single by Ryan Krueger and capped the scoring in the eighth when Danny Gibbons doubled, stole third and scored on a bouncer by Krueger.

The big story of the day on the mound was Naplin who hurled the final four innings and allowed just one hit and no runs to garner his second save of the season. He struck out two and didn't walk a batter. Fahndrich picked up the win to raise his record to 2-1.

Bullinger, Gates, Groves and Latour had three hits each as CMU raised its team batting average to .294 from .291. Grubb, Gibbons and Krueger each had a pair of safeties.

Ryan Ford led the EMU offense with three hits and five RBI, two on his second homer of the year.

Central Michigan set a MAC record for stolen bases in a tourney game with seven in seven tries. The old mark was five set by Miami in 1983 vs. Eastern Michigan. Grubb, Gates and Geldhof had two each.
