BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Central Michigan University eliminated the No. 1 seed Bowling Green State University here Friday in the 2002 Mid-American Conference tournament, 11-4.
The win moved the Chippewas into a second meeting in the tournament with Kent State University today at 4 p.m.
Coach Judd Folske's Chippewas are now 31-24 for the season, winners of nine of their last 11 games, while Bowling Green bows out with a 32-22 mark.
After Bowling Green scored a run in the bottom of the first, CMU battled back with four runs in the second for a 4-1 lead. Tim Groves drove in one with a single, Tim Bullinger two with a double and Ryan Krueger one on a single.
The Chippewas added two in the third on an RBI single by Scott Pickens and a wild pitch and a solo homer in the fifth by Tommy Grubb (4) made it 7-1.
Bowling Green scored in the fifth before Central broke it open in the seventh on a grand slam homer by Scott Pickens to make it 11-2. The Falcons added two in the bottom of the ninth but it was too little too late.
Junior Dan Horvath went the distance, scattering 10 hits and giving up four runs, three of which were earned. He walked six and struck out six to raise his record to 4-5.
Mike Gates and Pickens had two hits each for power CMU which was outhit by the Falcons, 10-9.
