BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - A splendid pitching performance by lefty T.J. Johnson went for naught as Kent State University sent Central Michigan University out of the 2002 Mid-American Conference tournament here Friday, 2-0.
The 6-3 Johnson hurled a complete game in his first career start but sustained the loss as his record fell to 1-2. He allowed just four hits while walking three and striking out five.CMU finished the season with a 31-25 record and Kent moved on with a 35-19 mark.
Kent State scored two runs in the seventh inning off Johnson, collecting three of the four hits he allowed for the game. A walk to Pat O'Brien was followed by an RBI double down the line by Brady Glass. Glass moved to third on an error and scored on an infield single by Tom Martin.
Johnson was in charge the rest of the game but Central batters had no answer for the Golden Flash duo of Matt Lorenzo (6-2) who went the first seven innings for the win. He walked just one and had a career-high 10 strikeouts, giving up five hits. Gus Hlebovy picked up the save with two scoreless innings of one-hit ball. It was his 11th of the season.
CMU had runners on second and third in the fifth and seventh innings but couldn't get a key hit.
Senior Tim Bullinger and redshirt frosh Jim Geldhof had two hits each to pace the Central offense.
