Chippewas Post 10-6 Win at Chicago State

CHICAGO, Ill. - Central Michigan University got some excellent pitching from senior left-hander Nick Zastrow en route to a 10-6 non-league win over Chicago State here Tuesday afternoon.
The Saginaw Valley Lutheran High product pitched six innings of three-hit shutout ball in relief to pick up the win. He fanned 10 and walked four to raise his record to 1-0 for the season.
Jason Cairns (Traverse City/Central) went the first two innings and allowed two runs, one unearned while Jason Frank (Watervliet) gave up four unearned runs in the ninth.
CMU tied the game in the second at 2-2 when Mike Gates (Canton/Flushing) doubled and scored on an infield grounder by Travis Osborn (Adrian). Jim Geldhof (Troy/Fr.) then singled and scored all the way from first on a single by Tom Grzywacz (Eastpointe/East Detroit).
Central took the lead for good with three in the third, 5-2. Tim Bullinger (Jackson/Lumen Christi) struck but reached second on a passed ball. He then scored the go-ahead run on a single by Ryan Krueger (Alpena). Krueger rode home on Danny Gibbons (Toronto, Ont./North TexasCentral CC) slugged a two-run homer. It was his fifth and third in as many days.
Gates had an RBI single in the seventh, David Latour (Barrie, Ont.) singled in Grzywacz in the eighth and CMU capped the scoring with three in the ninth - one on a bases-loaded walk to Osborn and two on a single by Geldhof.
Geldhof and Grzywacz had three hits each while Gibbons, Gates and Keith Sampsell (Vicksburg) had two apiece.
The Chippewas are now 22-20 for the season entering a home game on Wednesday with Michigan State University at 2 p.m.
