First Baseman Earns Academic Honor

MOUNT PLEASANT--Central Michigan University junior Mike Gates was named second team on the 2002 Verizon Academic All-American District IV team.
The 6-4 first baseman is a 3.59 student majoring in marketing and logistics. Gates is currently second on the team in batting average (.374). He also has seven home runs, 52 hits and 43 RBI.
The district team is made up of student-athletes from Division I schools in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee. To be nominated, student-athletes must be a starter or important reserve and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.
