MOUNT PLEASANT -- Scott Pickens became the fourth member of Central Michigan University's 2002 baseball team to sign a professional contract.
The former Mount Pleasant High standout signed recently with the Albany-Colonie (New York) Diamond Dogs of the Northern League East, an independent league. He was to join the team on Sunday.
Also playing professionally are pitchers Chad Pleiness (Auburn, N.Y.) and Lee Naplin (Kalamazoo), and outfielder Danny Gibbons (Vancouver, B.C.).
Pickens was the Chippewas' starting catcher the past two seasons, and hit .247 with three homers and 29 RBI in 2002. He threw out 16 of 38 would-be basestealers.
Pleiness is off to a solid start after being the fifth-round draft choice of the Toronto Blue Jays. He's 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA in six games. He's allowed 12 hits in 20 innings while walking seven and striking out 16. The Doubledays are 16-8.
Naplin is 0-0 with an ERA of 0.00 with the independent Kings. He's given up one hit in two and two-thirds innings.
Gibbons has struggled since being drafted in the 24th round by the Oakland A's. He's currently hitting just .071.
