MOUNT PLEASANT -- Judd Folske announced today that he is stepping down immediately as the Central Michigan University baseball coach.
"I'm resigning as the baseball coach but will remain on the athetics staff until the end of my contract when I will retire," Folske said.
Folske will be assigned to athletics director Herb Deromedi as an administrative assistant before retiring on June 30, 2003.
Folske has been the Chippewa coach since 1999, posting a four-year record of 131-98 (.572) and a Mid-American Conference mark of 63-45 (.583). His teams have reached the MAC playoffs the past three years, tying for the West Division crown in 2000 at 18-8.
"We have accepted his request to resign," said athletics director Herb Deromedi. "I want to thank him for his efforts and hard work on behalf of the baseball program."
Assistant coach Steve Jaksa will be the interim head coach through the 2003 season. CMU will conduct a search in the spring for a new head coach. Jaksa will have the opportunity at that time to apply for the position.
"Given the late date, it is best for the baseball team that Steve take over," Deromedi said. "I am confident in his ability to assume these duties and have the CMU baseball team well-prepared for the 2003 season."
CMU is wrapping up fall drills, and will begin its annual World Series this Friday at Theunissen Stadium. The first game is set for 2:30 p.m.
