MOUNT PLEASANT -- The Central Michigan University baseball team began the Maroon and Gold World Series this afternoon with Maroon holding on for the 5-4 win.
Maroon held a 5-1 lead after seven innings. However, the Gray team made it interesting in the eighth when it scored three runs to cut the Maroon lead to one. Gray even had a chance to tie it but the game-tying run was thrown out at the plate for the third out of the inning. Pitcher David LeMieux erased all hopes of a Gray comeback in the ninth. After surrenduring a leadoff hit, he struck out the next three batters to end the game.
Ryan Cremeans picked up the win for the Maroon team. He went seven innings and allowed eight hits, three runs, two earned runs, and had two walks and three strike outs. Lemieux picked up the save.
Jeff Opalewski went seven innings for the Gray team. He allowed seven hits, allowed five runs, four of them earned, and had four walks and three strikeouts.
Derek Schaller went 2-for-3 at the plate, scored two runs, and had two RBIs on a two-run home run.
Fall ball continues when the Maroon and Gray take the field tomorrow at 1 p.m. Jason Cairns and Jayson Ruhlman will take the mound in the series' second game.
