The Chippewas jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the opening game when Ryan Krueger and Jeff LaFavors doubled. Krueger scored on an infield out by Mike Gates and Dan Griesbaum's single plated LaFavors.
SIU got one back in the bottom of first to make it 2-1. CMU went up 3-1 with a run in the second on an RBI single by Chase Welker.
The Salukis took the lead for good in fourth with two runs after two were out. They made it 5-3 with a run in the fifth.
The Chippewas cut the deficit to 5-4 with a run in the seventh. Krueger doubled and scored on a single by Tommy Grubb.

Senior Joey Fahndrich (0-1) was the starter and loser for CMU. He went five innings and allowed five runs, four of which were earned. He gave up 11 hits, didn't walk a batter, and fanned five.
The Salukis banged out five more hits and seven runs off relievers Nick Patterson, David LeMieux, Chris Schell, and Adam Sutherland. SIU finished with a season-high 16 safeties.
Krueger and Griesbaum powered the Chippewas with three hits each, both collecting a pair of doubles.
CMU was no hit into the eighth inning of the second game and trailed 6-0 when it managed to score a run. Brian Campbell and Chase Welker drew one-out walks, and Krueger laid down a perfect bunt for a base hit to load the bases. David Latour hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Campbell.

Ryan Cremeans (0-2) was the starter and loser for CMU. He lasted just two and two-thirds innings, allowing 10 hits and six earned runs.
The bright spot for the Chippewas on the day was the pitching of two relievers in the nightcap. Redshirt freshman Mark Lundquist tossed four and one-third scoreless innings, allowing four hits and fanning two. Junior Jeff Opalewski went the final inning, shutting the Salukis down in order with two strikeouts.
Mike Gates got CMU's second hit of the game with a clean single up the middle in the ninth.
After driving in four runs with three hits in the opener, SIU freshman Nathan Emrick had four more hits and plated two runs in the second game.
