TOLEDO, Ohio - The University of Toledo rode the pitching of 6-7 sophomore right-hander J.R. Duffey to an 11-5 Mid-American Conference baseball win over Central Michigan University here Friday afternoon.
The two teams are slated to meet on Saturday for two more contests beginning at 1 p.m. Toledo is now 11-17 overall and 2-7 in MAC action while the Chippewas are now 12-17 and 2-5 in loop play.
Duffey scattered nine hits and allowed just three earned runs in going the distance for the Rockets in their first MAC home game. He struck out seven and walked three.
CMU claimed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Mike Gates singled in Jim Geldhof who had walked. When the right fielder booted the ball, Tommy Grubb (who reached on a single) scored all the way from first and Gates went to third. The throw to third was errant and Gates scored.
However, the Rockets came back with four in the first off Chippewa starter Ty Dunham. Three runs came on a soaring homer to right by Mitch Maier, his seventh. UT then added two more in the second on a homer to center by Sean Dobson to chase Dunham and give the home team a 6-3 lead.
CMU made it 6-4 with a solo run in the fifth without a hit. Ryan Krueger was hit by a pitch and went to second on a walk to Geldhof. Both runners advanced on a double steal, and Krueger came home on a sacrifice fly by Brian Lautzenheiser.
The Chippewas drew within one at 6-5, tallying an unearned marker in the sixth. Gates walked, moved to second on an error, and scored on a single to shallow center by Chase Welker.
UT plated three runs on four in the sixth to knock reliever Ryan Cremeans off the mound, and cop a 9-5 edge.
Geldhof led the Chippewa attack with three singles while Maier had two hits and five RBI.
Dunham (2-2) took the loss, allowing three hits and six earned runs in one inning of work.
