MOUNT PLEASANT - Ryan Cremeans gave himself a birthday present here Wednesday on a cold, windy afternoon.
Cremeans, who turned 21 on Wedneswday, hurled seven and one-third innings of five-hit ball in leading Central Michigan University to an 8-4 non-league baseball win over Saginaw Valley State.
Cremeans, a junior left-hander, fanned 12 Cardinal batters to raise his record to 1-3. He tired in the eighth and was relieved by Mark Lundquist. David LeMieux then took over for Lundquist to collect his third save of the season. He went one and one-third inning without allowing a hit.
CMU is now 8-14 for the season while SVSU falls to 14-5.
The Cardinals scored a run in the second on back-to-back doubles by Dan Jones and Mike Crawford to grab a 1-0 lead before CMU scored twice in the second to take the lead for good, 2-1. After Tommy Grubb walked, Mike Gates tripled to center and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Brian Lautzenheiser.
David Latour scored an unearned run in the third when he was safe on an error, went to third on a single by Jim Geldhof, and scored on a wild pitch.
The Chippewas broke it open with four runs in the sixth for a 7-1 edge. CMU only had two hits in the inning but took advantage of three walks, two hit batters, and three wild pitches. Jim Geldhof had a two-run single in the inning.
SVSU battled back for three runs in the eighth on just one hit to cut the margin to 7-4. LeMieux faced one batter as the third CMU hurler of the frame and fanned the lone man he faced with the bases full.
The Chippewas got one back in the eighth when Ryan Krueger and Grubb had back-to-back singles with Krueger scoring on an infield bouncer by Gates.
Geldhof, Krueger, Grubb, and Gates all had two hits for the Chippewas.
CMU returns to action at home this Friday when Kent State University comes to Theunissen Stadium for a Mid-American Conference clash at 2 p.m.
