Western Michigan
Coach Gary Darnell:
"It was a game full of superlatives. Guys played their hearts out on both sides of the football. They just had one more superlative than us.
"The whole concept of finishing has escaped us this year. Virtually every time that we have a disaster play, like the fumble at the end, it is from someone that is filling in.
"We went through phases of confidence today, but then when we had to stop them at the end I think that the pressure got to us. People always talk about rivalry games as being different, but what it comes down to is which team is better prepared."

PK Ronald Budd:
On last minute field goal: "I didn't want to let me team down (by missing the field goal), and I just wanted to make it for my team. The timeout (before) gave me a little time to relieve myself. I just tried to aim for the top right post because of the wind.
QB Kent Smith:
"This win was huge for us because now we have a chance to reach .500. We made some adjustments to the defenses that they gave us (at the end of the game)."
Coach Brian Kelly:
"With three minutes left to go in the game it didn't look too good for us. I always tell the team to keep fighting, keeping playing hard and you've got a shot. We did a very good job coming back and responding. In a minute we scored and didn't use a timeout in that drive and got the thing to 21-14. I felt at that point let's kick the ball with two timeouts left. We didn't have to onside kick and we managed it pretty good to give us a chance to win it."
"Ron Budd has been asked to come in in circumstances less than ideal. I certainly wanted him to make it but I just wanted him to get in there and make a good swipe at it. He was in a tough situation and I couldn't have faulted the kid if he didn't make it. Given the circumstances, he was probably so nervous that he couldn't see straight."
"I knew he was very nervous and everyone said to bring him over (during the timeout WMU called to ice him). I said no, leave him out on the field. I'm not sure he'd want to go back out there."
