Chippewas Fall in Baseball, 8-7

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- Utah Valley State University rallied for five runs in the bottom of the ninth for an 8-7 baseball win over Central Michigan University here Wednesday.
The Chippewas are now 2-5 for the season while the win upped UVSU to 2-7.
CMU took a 7-3 lead into the final frame when relief hurler Joel Pelland gave up two runs to make it 7-5. Jason Cairns then took over and was touched for three more to take the loss. He's now 1-2 on the season.
Freshman Mike Kirschenheiter was effective in his first collegiate outing. He tossed six innings and allowed four hits and three runs. He walked just one and fanned five.
Pelland tossed two and one-third innings and was touched for three hits and two runs. He walked two and fanned one. Cairns went just one-third of an inning, allowing three hits and three runs.
Hitting .317 as a team entering the game, the Chippewas pounded out 13 more hits. Jim Geldhof drove in three runs with three hits while Kurtis Wells slugged his second homer in as many days and plated two runs. Dan Griesbaum Jr., slammed three hits and drove in one runs with Derek Schaller and J.T. Jones each adding a pair of hits.
CMU will play its final game here on Thursday when it faces host Southern Utah at 1 p.m. The Chippewas will then move on to Las Vegas where they will play a three-game set against UNLV beginning Friday with a game at 6:30 p.m.
