MOUNT PLEASANT -- Veteran play-by-play announcer Ed Phelps will be joined in the broadcast booth by Kurt Wilson this upcoming season for Central Michigan University football broadcasts on the CMU Radio Network.
Phelps will begin his 28th season announcing the Chippewas while Wilson will provide the color analysis for the first time this year.
Phelps has been the sports director at WJRT TV-12 in Flint since 1972. His sportscasts have earned top honors in the state (encompassing the area outside Detroit) from the Associated Press a total of 13 times.
Wilson served as the host of the pregame show last season. He's provided the play-by-play coverage of Chippewa basketball on the CMU Television Network for the last five years, including the radio play-by-play for the 2003-04 season. Wilson also hosts the CMU Coaches Zone television show.
Scott Loomis will host the pregame, halftime and postgame portion of the broadcasts. Loomis worked with the CMU Radio and Television Networks last season on both football (sideline reporter) and basketball (radio play-by-play for select games) broadcasts.
Herb Deromedi, CMU's athletics director, is stepping down from color commentary duties after nine seasons in the booth.
"We're excited to have both Ed Phelps and Kurt Wilson providing the call on our radio broadcasts," Deromedi said. "I think it's a great time for me to step out of the broadcast booth and leave it to professionals."
The Michigan Talk Radio Network will again distribute the broadcasts to the network stations. A complete station lineup will be announced this summer.
The Chippewas kick off the 2004 football season on September 4 at Indiana.
