SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- T.J. Johnson is back.
The senior left-hander Byron, hampered by arm woes all of the 2003 season, pitched Central Michigan University to one of its biggest upsets in baseball memory with a 4-1 win over eighth-ranked Notre Dame here Tuesday night.
The win upped CMU's record to 7-10 and ended a six-game Fighting Irish winning streak against the Chippewas. ND is now 13-3.
Johnson, 1-1 for the season, hurled all nine innings and scattered eight hits. He walked just two and fanned six.
The lone Irish run came in the seventh when Matt Bransfield led off with a solo homer.
CMU scored all the runs it needed in the first frame when it plated three runs. Eric Cannon opened the game with a single and Jim Geldhof was safe on a fielder's choice/error. Bryan Mitzel cleared the bases with a two-run triple and later scored on a doubleplay.
The Chippewas added an insurance run in the second when Cannon singled, stole second and then raced home on a double by Geldhof.
Cannon and Mitzel paced the CMU hitters with two safeties each.
The starter and loser for ND was Joe Thaman who went the first two innings.
The Chippewas return to action on Wednesday at IPFW with the first pitch set for 2 p.m.
