CMU Winning Streak Ends at Five

ROCHESTER -- Central Michigan University's five-game baseball winning streak came to an end here Tuesday afternoon when Oakland University scored twice in the bottom of the 10th for a 5-4 win.
The Chippewas, now 22-1 all-time vs. the Grizzlies, are now 16-14 for the season while OU goes to 7-19.
CMU scored a run in the top of the 10th when Chase Welker was safe on an error, was sacrificed to second, took third on a passed ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Eric Cannon.
However, the Grizzlies touched Chippewa relief ace David LeMieux (0-2) for two runs in their half of the 10th for the win. Ryan Frieburger walked to open the inning, took second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a wild pitch. Ryan Heath then tripled to center to tie the game and scored the winning run on a wild throw to third on the play.
The normally hard-hitting Chippewas were held to five hits by three OU pitchers. Kurtis Wells drove in three runs, two on a homer in the fourth to put CMU ahead, 3-2.
Jeff Opalewski was the starter for CMU, going five innings and allowing seven hits and two runs (one earned). He walked four and struck out seven. Nick Patterson went two-third of an inning and gave up one run while Jason Cairns held the Grizzlies hitless for three and one-third innings. Hde walked one and fanned five.
CMU returns to action at home on Wednesday when Michigan comes to Theunissen Stadium for a game at 3 p.m.
