Though drafted by the Detroit Tigers out of high school, Central Michigan University senior Ryan Cremeans chose to pursue college instead.
"It was the right choice, I wasn't prepared to play," Cremeans said, a left-handed pitcher.
Born on April 2, 1982 in Adrian, Michigan, Cremeans started playing baseball at an early age.
His family was really into baseball and it was "a natural thing to do," Cremeans said. Nick Bates, Cremean's cousin, played baseball at Michigan State before playing in the Milwaukee Brewers organization.
Cremeans started by played t-ball and then went on to little league baseball. He then attended Adrian High School, where he earned three letters in baseball. As a senior, he also posted a 9-1 record, becoming all-region.
Cremeans chose to attend CMU because of "the coach and the tradition," he said. His major is sports studies with a minor in business administration.
In 2001, Cremeans was 2-0 with a 6.91 ERA. The following year, he went 1-2 with a 6.39 ERA. During the 2003 season, Cremeans struck out a career high 12 batters in a win over Saginaw Valley. He also played 14 games, starting 11, and posted a 3-5 record and a 6.99 ERA.
Last summer, Cremeans played for Danbury in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
Cremeans would like to continue baseball after college, as well, but if that does not work out, he wants to attend law school.
His sports hero is fellow left-handed pitcher David Wells who plays for the Padres because he thinks they are similar to one another.
Other then baseball, Cremeans likes to play golf, but does not really have too much free time outside of practice and classes.
His favorite television show is The Chappelle Show, and his favorite movie is The Godfather, Part I.
Cremeans credits Jesus and his parents as his role models.
His dad, Keith, is a service director at General Motors, and his mom, Kathy, a high school math teacher.
He also has a brother who is a senior in high school.
CMU's baseball team is currently first place in the MAC, and Cremeans wants the team to go all the way this season.
Ryan has a 3-2 record with an ERA of 5.83. Two of his wins have come in the MAC, beating Bowling Green (15-8) and Toledo (8-3).
"I want the team to win the MAC championship and to go to the NCAA tournament and win that, too," Cremeans said.
