MOUNT PLEASANT - Oakland University put an end to Central Michigan University's eight-game winning streak here Tuesday afternoon with a 2-1 baseball win.
CMU is now 27-21 for the season and the Golden Grizzlies are 17-28. The win was OU's second of the season against the Chippewas after having lost all 22 matchups prior to 2004. Oakland also won a 5-4 contest in 10 innings this year.
OU's Brad Morenko (3-0) won both games against CMU, this time going the final five and two-third innings without allowing a run and striking out two. He went five innings and allowed one unearned run in the first game.
The Chippewas broke a scoreless tie and chased OU starter Dan Stinchcombe with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Jim Geldhof led off with a single, went to second when Kurtis Wells was hit by a pitch, took third on a bounce out and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Jeff LaFavors Jr.
The Golden Grizzlies took a 2-1 lead in the sixth with a pair of runs off reliever Mike Kirschenheiter. Back-to-back doubles by Tim Doig and John Sullivan key the rally.
Kirschenheiter (1-1) took the loss, going two and one-third innings and allowing three hits and two earned runs. Jayson Ruhlman tossed the first three innings for CMU and gave up one hit while walking two and striking out four. Mark Lundquist followed Ruhlman and pitched two and two-third scoreless innings, walking none and striking out two. David LeMieux hurled the final frame and didn't give up a hit.
The Chippewas had five hits, two by Geldhof, while OU had just four - three in the sixth. Oakland turned three doubleplays.
CMU, leaders of the Mid-American Conference West Division with a 13-5 record returns home on Friday to play the University at Buffalo at 3 p.m.
