MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University head field hockey coach Cristy Freese announced the filling of two coaching positions.
Earl Marais will step in and serve as the assistant coach and former Chippewa field hockey player Meg Lewis will take over as the graduate assistant in 2004.
Marais brings 14 years of coaching experience and 19 years of playing experience to CMU. The South African native spent the past year as an assistant coach for a club team in Charlotte, N.C., and has been a head coach for numerous different ages and levels.
"I am very excited to have Earl come to CMU," said Freese. "He has done a great deal of coaching for all ages and for both men and women. He also has a good deal of administrative experience.
"He is a real positive person and will bring in some great new ideas. He is a real student of the game."
Lewis returns to the Chippewa field hockey program after wrapping up her playing career in 2002. She was a three-year starter for CMU and racked-up 18 goals and six assists in her career. Lewis was also named to the Academic All-MAC squad in 2001 and 02.
"Meg really blossomed as a player at CMU and now wants to move into coaching," said Freese. "She has worked in the summer coaching kids in her hometown in New York and I think that she will be a great addition to our staff."
The Chippewas will open the season on the road at Ohio State on September 3 at 4 p.m.
