MOUNT PLEASANT -- Career highs in points and rebounds by Dana Westover were not enough to prevent Central Michigan University from dropping a 69-64 Mid-American Conference women's basketball decision to Western Michigan here Wednesday night.
The 6-2 Westover, a redshirt freshman, had 14 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Chippewas. It marked her second straight double-double.
However, poor shooting from the floor prevented the Chippewas from winning their MAC opener. CMU is now 6-6 for the season and 0-1 in the MAC. WMU is 4-8 overall and 1-0 in loop action.
The Broncos held a 30-29 halftime lead and trailed just once in the second half at 31-30 as the trio of Kelly Koerber (20), Carrie Moore (19) and Brittany Tyson (17) combined for 56 points.
While WMU shot 44.4 percent from the field on 24-of-54 CMU made just 23-of-65 for 35.4 percent. Both teams shot well from the free throw line -- WMU making 20-of-26 (76.9 percent) and CMU 14-of-17 (82.4).
The Chippewas did hold a 43-37 edge in rebounding with Ann Skufca backing Westover's 15 with nine and Casey Manning claiming eight.
The Chippewas had two more players in twin figures led by Manning with 18 and Lindy Hatfield 11.
CMU did hold a four-point lead in the first half, 26-22 with 4:34 remaining but was outscored, 8-5, the rest of the way.
CMU returns to MAC action at Ball State on Saturday at 3 p.m.
