MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Freshman Teja Kammler's game-winning goal in overtime gave the No. 3-seeded Miami University RedHawks a 1-0 victory over No. 2-seeded Ohio on Friday in the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinals at the CMU Field Hockey Complex. Kammler ended the scoring drought in the eighth minute of overtime to give the RedHawks a date with No. 4-seed Central Michigan University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Miami improves to 10-11 while Ohio ends the year at 8-12.
Miami advanced to today's semifinal match with a dramatic 3-2 overtime win over Ball State in the quarterfinals on Thursday that was not decided until the second round of penalty strokes.
RedHawk head coach Jill Reeve was proud of her team's effort.
"In both (tournament) games, we were slowed a little bit, but we seemed to grow as the game went on," Reeve said. "This win was huge for us because we haven't always been able to finish. I'm really proud of our team. Our two freshmen (Kammler and Courtney Fretz) did an excellent job on the breakaway to score the goal."
Kammler netted her third goal of the season on a pass from Fretz on the breakaway.
Miami goalkeeper Kerri Orr earned the shutout with four saves. She has five shutouts on the season. Ohio keeper Jennifer Cote made a save in the loss.
Ohio edged Miami in shots (six to four), but the teams were even in penalty corners with four each.
The MAC Tournament winner will travel to the America East Conference champion on Tuesday, Nov. 8, for a play-in game for a bid to the 16-team NCAA Championships.
