MOUNT PLEASANT - The Chippewas jumped out to a 17-0 lead and never looked back in an 89-42 victory over Rochester College on Saturday afternoon in Rose Arena.
CMU's defense forced 29 turnovers and held the Warriors to 35 percent shooting while the Maroon and Gold scorched the nets at 57 percent, including a 61 percent clip from three-point range.
"We completely dominated the first 10 minutes of the game," CMU coach Jay Smith said. "We were all over them, they couldn't dribble, couldn't shoot, couldn't see. We need to play with that same intensity all the time. We can take people out of their game when we play like that."
The Chippewas improved to 2-5 while Rochester evened its record at 7-7.
Giordan Watson had one of the top floor games of his career with a game-high 16 points, two rebounds, a career-high tying nine assists and four steals to just one turnover.
Teammate Sefton Barrett had a flashy game with 14 points and six rebounds, along with career highs of five assists and six steals. He had four high flying slams in the game, including three-in-a-row over a 49 second stretch in the first half.
Barrett's trio of dunks extended CMU's lead to 29-3 with 9:05 left and the Chippewas would lead by as many as 29 in the opening frame before settling for a 48-21 lead at the break.
CMU's defense maintained its intensity in the second half holding Rochester to 28 percent shooting from the floor.
Odai Baylor was the lone Warrior to hit double figures with 13 points.
Freshman Aaron Richie posted a career-high 14 points, including four three-pointers off the bench.
All 12 Chippewa players scored, including John Tiemeyer and Tyrone Jordan who both notched the first points of their careers. Tiemeyer finished with six points, two coming on an alley oop from Jordan who also dished out two assists.
The Chippewas now have a week off for exams before hosting Missouri Valley Conference foe Southern Illinois on Sunday, Dec. 18. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. and the game will air throughout Michigan on Comcast Local.
