MOUNT PLEASANT - The Michigan Sports Hall of Fame unveiled its Michigan MAC Football Championship trophy at Kelly/Shorts Stadium on Saturday prior to kickoff of Central Michigan University's game against Eastern Michigan.
The trophy will signify the championship of the three Michigan-based Mid-American Conference schools -- CMU, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan. It will be presented to the school that beats the other two in the same season and will remain in possession of the winning school until one of the rivals claims the title.
"We hope the trophy will be contended for in a spirited fashion befitting the tradition and history of these traditional rivals and the Hall of Fame," said Michigan Sports Hall of Fame executive director Jim Stark.
CMU, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan have been competing in the MAC together since the 1976 season. The Chippewas have swept their in-state rivals 13 times during that span.
