SPRINGFIELD, Mo- Central Michigan field hockey (8-7, 3-3 MAC) had a 2-0 weekend against Missouri State (1-5 MAC), including Sundays 3-2 victory.
“Kelly (Jordan), Samantha (Sandham), and Alicia (Balanesi) really worked well together on the forward line and were the reason for our offensive success this weekend,” said head coach Cristy Freese.
The Chippewas took control early in the match earning a penalty corner in the first minute of play. CMU would take four shots before sophomore Kelly Jordan would put CMU up, 1-0, in the 10th minute of play. Nine minutes would pass before Amanda Lucik put in her third goal of the weekend to put the Chippewas up, 2-0.
“On Saturday, I told Amanda that she would have opportunities to score this weekend, with what we were trying to do on the right side of the field,” said Freese. “She was right where she needed to be to score her goals this weekend.”
Three minutes into the second half CMU suffered a great loss when senior back Erin Dottery was injured, causing her to leave the match. The Bears would capitalize on the loss when Melissa Millin cut the Chippewas lead in half, 2-1, in the 42nd minute of play. CMU continued to add pressure in Missouri’s defensive circle putting four shots on goal before the Bears put in the equalizer. Katie Schwartz scored for Missouri on a penalty corner in the 50th minute to tie the match at 2-2. Jordan would slip the game-winning goal, 3-2, in the net with three minutes remaining in the match, for her second goal of the game.
“Missouri took advantage of Erin getting hurt in the second half tying the match up at 2-2,” said Freese. “When Erin came back in, with 17 minutes to go in the match, she was able to settle us down and help regain control of the match.”
Senior goalkeeper Danielle Frank had 12 saves on the day.
The Chippewas will host Michigan State on Tuesday, October 17, at 4 p.m. at the CMU Field Hockey Complex.
