MOUNT PLEASANT – Central Michigan University field hockey finished the regular season 6-4 in the MAC and 11-9 overall, and is the No. 4 seed entering the MAC Tournament, beginning on Thursday, November 2. The Chippewas will match-up against Kent State on Thursday, November 2, at noon. “Regular season MAC matches are intense and the MAC Tournament is even more intense,” said head coach Cristy Freese. “The tournament is one loss and you are done, so it brings a different level of play.” The Chippewas have defeated the Golden Flashes in both their meetings this season. In their first match-up CMU had a 2-1 overtime victory. The two teams met up again for the last match of the regular season, where the Chippewas handed Kent State a 3-0 loss, CMU’s first shutout of the season. “We played really well on Saturday against Kent State,” Freese said. “We know we have to take it one game at a time and stay focused on giving our best effort every day to be successful in the MAC Tournament.” CMU finished the season with the second best overall record of 11-9 and was tied with two other teams, Ball State and Miami, for second place in the MAC, 6-4. With the MAC having to wait until the last match was played to be certain of the seeding and with the regular season filled with upsets, like the No. 2 seed Ball State and No. 5 seed Kent State both beating No. 1 seed Ohio, it sets the stage for a tough tournament. “There are three teams tied for second and Ball State has beaten Ohio, so it should be a very competitive tournament,” Freese said. “All the teams have such close records that everyone has a chance to win this year.” In 2005, CMU won the MAC Tournament as the fourth seed. The Chippewas defeated three teams and out-scored their opponents 9-1 on their way to being MAC Tournament Champions. “The experience of winning the MAC Tournament last season helps, but the tournament is a tough time, last year the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds both got knocked out in the semifinals,” Freese said.
