FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Central Michigan University senior Dave Stallworth competed in the weight throw competition at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Randal Tyson Indoor Track at the University of Arkansas. He placed 14th with a throw of 58-11 1/2. It was the first appearance at the NCAA Championships for Stallworth.
"I'm proud of Dave for getting to the national meet this season," CMU head coach Jim Knapop said. "He's had a great career at CMU, and with the indoor season done he'll get ready for the outdoor season. We're counting on him to bring a lot of leadership to our team outdoors, and I know he'll do a great job for us."
On the women's side, senior Tamera Thomas came through with a school-record shattering performance in the pentathlon to earn All-America honors for the first time at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. She totaled 4,069 points, 128 points more than her previous school-record best, across the five events that make up the pentathlon to finish eighth among the 18 competitors that started the pentathlon.
"I'm really proud of what Tamera accomplished today," CMU head coach Karen Lutzke said. "She's had an awesome season from start to finish, and this really just caps it off for her. To qualify for the national meet in two events, and then to become an All-American in the most demanding event is really special. I know Tamera's excited about that, and she should be."
Thomas, who finished 15th in the 60m hurdles on the first day of competition yesterday, had top-five finishes in the first two events of the pentathlon, the 60m hurdles and the high jump. Her hurdle time of 8.38 earned her 1,044 points and put her in second place after the first event, just two points behind leader and eventual winner Jacquelyn Johnson of Arizona State University. In the high jump, Thomas cleared 5-8 to finish fifth and score 891 points, helping her hold on to second place with 1,935 points after two events.
Thomas put forth very strong efforts in the last three events, the shot put, long jump and 800m run. She threw a personal-best of 33-4 1/2 in the shot put to score 541 points, bringing her total to 2,476 points through three events. She fell back to sixth place overall after the shot put competition.
She long-jumped 19-2 1/2 to score 804 points and raise her total to 3,280 points after four events. She sat in seventh place after four events. In the 800m, she turned in a personal-best time of 2:22.53, more than 10 seconds better than any previous 800m she had run, to earn 789 points and secure All-America honors with her eighth-place finish.
"What she did in the 800m was the most impressive part of her performance today," Lutzke said. "She knew what she had to run to stay in the top eight, and she went out and did it. We knew what the other competitors were capable of, but she just stayed focused on keeping contact in the 800 with her closest pursuers, and she did it. It was an excellent day for her.
"I think it says a lot about her as an athlete and a competitor. She was very relaxed today and just went out and competed to the best of her ability. She was seeded 18th entering the meet, but she just maintained her focus in every event and didn't worry about anything else. It was a great performance by a great athlete."
Thomas is the first Chippewa female to earn indoor All-America honors since Suzy Bozin took sixth in the high jump in 2002. She is just the fifth female All-American, indoors or outdoors, in CMU track and field history, joining Bozin, Maria Derezinski (heptathlon, 2002), Karen Wilkerson (javelin, 1991) and Chris Cooper (5000m, 1987).
The indoor track season is now concluded. The outdoor season for CMU begins on April 1, when both the men's and women's teams will compete at the Notre Dame Outdoor Opener in Notre Dame, Ind.
