Two Goal Start for CMU

MOUNT PLEASANT – A pair of goals lifted the Chippewas (1-0) to a 2-1 win, their first of the 2006 season, over Syracuse University (0-1), at CMU Field Hockey Complex Sunday.
Sophomore Moyra Betuzzi put the first goal past the Orange in the 21st minute of play. Teammate senior Alicia Balanesi dodged her defender and slipped a pass to Betuzzi who finished the play in the lower left corner.
Five minutes into the second half CMU closed the door for Syracuse when sophomore Samantha Sandham tipped the game-winning goal into the back of the net on a penalty corner. The Chippewas were able to execute their play when fellow sophomore Kelly Jordan took a shot aimed just left of the cage where teammate Sandham was able to get a stick on the ball.
“Sam did an excellent job of making herself open on the corner play pulling out just wide of the goalkeeper to tip the ball in the net,” said head coach Cristy Freese.
Syracuse gained momentum midway through the second half when Michelle Sola cut CMU’s lead in half. Sola was able to blast a powerful shot past the Chippewas in the 55th minute on a penalty corner play from Ashley Fry.
“We knew we had to keep an eye on Sola, she has a big shot,” said Freese. “We just lost track of her on that corner and she was able to capitalize by scoring a goal.”
CMU controlled the pace of the game out-shooting Syracuse 19-15. The Chippewas had 10 penalty corners to the Orange’s seven.
Sandham was a key player for CMU, controlling much of the Chippewas possession in the midfield and transitioning the ball from the backfield to the forward line. Fellow sophomores midfielder Amanda Lucik and Betuzzi were able to use their great speed to push the ball up the right side of the field for the Chippewas.
“We have a young team on the field and today our youth was able to defeat Syracuse and their experience,” said Freese.
Coming up big on defense for the Chippewas were freshmen Tara Schiltz and Kim Erasmus. Schiltz had two defensive saves on the day, while Erasmus shut down Syracuse’s offense on their strong side. Senior goalkeeper Danielle Frank added five saves to the effort.
“Today was a nice win, said Freese. “”With only two weeks of practice before entering this game, I am very happy with our ability to execute our game plan against such a team as Syracuse.”
CMU will host Saint Louis on both Saturday, September 2 at noon and Sunday, September 3 at 11 a.m.
