BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – Freshman Kim Erasmus’s first career goal lifted the Central Michigan University field hockey team (4-2) to a 2-1 overtime victory against Maine on Saturday.
The University of Maine (3-4) took an early 1-0 lead when Kirsten Costa scored for the Black Bears in the 13th minute of the match. Both teams matched up well throughout the first half as CMU had six shots on goal to Maine’s five.
“Maine gave us a good game,” CMU head coach Cristy Freese said. “We came out and controlled things early, however, Maine came back to shut us down and put their goal in.”
The second half would continue to be an even competition until sophomore Kelly Jordan tied the game at 1-1 with nine minutes remaining in regulation, her third goal of the season and second of the weekend.
“Kelly has the talent to be scoring every game for us,” said Freese. “This weekend’s two goals for her will, hopefully, get her on track to do so. But our offense still needs to score more for us to be successful this season.”
In overtime action, Maine came out firing with an early shot that was saved by senior goalkeeper Danielle Frank. Frank added five saves to her 12 from Friday’s match for 17 saves on the weekend.
“Danielle had an outstanding weekend for us,” said Freese. “She played in every minute and came up with some big saves throughout both overtime matches.”
The Chippewas’s freshman midfielder Kim Erasmus would end the match in the 11th minute of overtime play when she carried the ball into Maine’s defensive circle and took a hard shot into the back of the Black Bears cage.
“Overtime games are always exciting,” said Freese. “The team was so exhausted from the two overtime games this weekend that the game winning goal was not only a great feeling for us to win, but a feeling of release that the game was done.”
CMU will return home to the CMU Field Hockey Complex on Sunday, September 24 to host Northwestern at 11 a.m.
