CMU Drops Army, 47-23, for Third Straight Win

Dan LeFevour became the school’s all-time leader in touchdown passes in the win. He completed 30-of-39 throws for 251 yards and two scores, while also running 14 times for 100 yards and four touchdowns.
Josh Gordy, meanwhile, matched a school record with three interceptions, including one he returned 15 yards for a score in the fourth quarter.
The CMU defense forced a season-high seven turnovers, intercepting five passes and recovering a pair of fumbles. Four of the turnovers resulted in CMU touchdowns. The Chippewas (4-3 overall) have scored 105 points the past two weeks, the most in consecutive games in 23 years.
LeFevour accounted for five touchdowns in the first half, including a quarterback sneak from the 1-yard line that capped CMU’s first possession.
The defense forced Army (3-4 overall) to punt on its first two possessions, but a breakdown on CMU’s special teams allowed the Black Knights to get on the scoreboard. Lined up to punt from its own 28-yard line, the snap sailed over punter Tony Mikulec’s head. Mikulec gathered the ball near the end zone and attempted a desperation punt that was blocked out of the back of the end zone for a safety.
Army covered 69 yards in nine plays following the free kick, with Carson Williams throwing a 15-yard touchdown pass to Corey Anderson to give Army its only lead of the day.
The Chippewas answered by scoring 26 consecutive points. LeFevour threw touchdown passes to Bryan Anderson (8 yards) and Justin Hoskins (15 yards) and ran for two scores as CMU built a 33-9 lead.
Kevin Dunn came off the bench to throw an 8-yard scoring pass to Jeremy Trimble late in the half to cut the CMU halftime lead to 33-16.
Following a scoreless third quarter, LeFevour capped CMU’s first drive of the fourth quarter with a 5-yard scoring run on third-and-goal. Williams threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Trimble on the following possession, and Gordy capped the scoring with his 15-yard interception return with 4:20 remaining.
CMU plays its next three games on the road, beginning with next weekend’s trip to Clemson. Kickoff is at noon for the contest, which will air on ESPNU.
