MOUNT PLEASANT - The Central Michigan University women's soccer team lost its regular season home finale this afternoon, falling to Buffalo, 1-0, on Senior Day at the CMU Soccer Complex. The defeat snapped CMU's two-match winning streak and dropped it to 4-3-0 on its home field in 2007.
The Chippewas (7-8-0, 3-5-0 Mid-American Conference) were shut out for the seventh time this season and lost for the first time in six all-time home contests against Buffalo (5-9-2, 2-5-1 MAC).
The match was scoreless until the Bulls scored the only goal of the match in the 65th minute. Buffalo built an attack on the left side of the field and Ashley Turner crossed the ball to the right side of the field to Lindsey Bailey, who gathered the pass just outside the box and fired a shot into the left corner of the net past CMU goalkeeper Kristen Hubright.
CMU dominated the match statistically, outshooting the Bulls, 19-10, and earning a 6-5 edge in corner kicks. UB goalkeeper Amy Coron made 11 saves to record the shutout, while Hubright had four saves and took just her second loss of the season in six starts.
Prior to the match, CMU recognized its two seniors, Erin Douglas and Laura Gaesser, in a pre-match ceremony on the field. The two played their final regular season match at the CMU Soccer Complex.
CMU missed out on a chance to move up in the MAC standings, though it did maintain its hold on eighth place in the conference standings. The top eight teams qualify for the MAC Tournament, which CMU has not missed since 1998, the women's soccer program's first year of existence. The Chippewas have the longest streak of consecutive appearances in the postseason tournament of any school in the MAC.
CMU will play its final three matches of the season on the road, beginning with a match at Northern Illinois this Friday, Oct. 26. The contest with the Huskies will kick off at 4 p.m. CDT in DeKalb, Ill.
