Game Two Box Score
CARBONDALE, Ill. - Southern Illinois took both ends of a nonconference baseball doubleheader Sunday to complete a three-game sweep over Central Michigan University.
SIU (6-3 overall) won the opener, 4-2, then rallied for a 10-8 win in game two. The Salukis have now won five consecutive games.
Southern Illinois registered just four hits and committed four errors in the opener, but manufactured three runs in the sixth inning.
Three SIU pitchers held the Chippewas (2-4 overall) to single unearned runs in the third and ninth inning, respectively, and combined to post 10 strikeouts. Starter Cody Adams improved to 3-0, allowing five hits and striking out eight in 6-2/3 innings. Cody Allen (3-for-5) drove in Tyler Stovall (3-for-4) twice to account for both of CMU’s runs.
In game two, CMU led 5-2 before Southern Illinois plated seven unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Salukis took advantage of three Chippewa errors and received a two-out, three-run home run by Chris Crank in the inning. Crank’s shot to left gave SIU a 9-5 lead entering the seventh.
CMU drew within a run in the top of the seventh. Ben Humphrey led off the inning with a solo homer, Scott Szpyrka doubled home Eric Cannon, and Sean Hoorelbeke plated Szpyrka with a two-out single.
Southern Illinois added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, however. With runners on second and third and two outs, Dean Cademartori and Adam Hills drew back-to-back walks to force in Michael Finigan.
CMU loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but Bryant George pitched his way out of the jam to earn his first save of the season.
Bryan Mitzel’s run-scoring single staked the Chippewas to a 1-0 first-inning lead, but Southern Illinois evened the score on Tyler Lairson’s sacrifice fly in the second inning. Sean Hoorelbeke’s three-run home run, his first of the season, put CMU back up 4-1 in the top of the fourth. After Southern Illinois drew within 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Hoorelbeke doubled home Stovall to bump the lead back to three runs in the top of the sixth.
Hoorelbeke and Szpyrka were both 3-for-5 in game two for CMU. Hoorelbeke drove in a career-high five runs and scored once, while Szpyrka drove in a run and scored twice.
CMU heads south next weekend, opening a 10-day, eight-game swing through Florida with a three-game series at South Florida. Friday’s series opener begins at 6 p.m.
